If you do consider adopting Kai, or any of the other darlings at SPCA looking for a home, I hope you get your miracle.Īlthough my work primarily revolves around strengthening the animal welfare cause, I am equally passionate about finding more equitable and equal opportunities for women (especially young girls) to claim their rightful place in society! This smiley, gentle boy will need a second chance at a loving home with someone who can attend to his medical needs. He was found with poor dental health, and a severe ear infection, rendering him deaf. Kai appeared to be severely neglected before being abandoned. Like Bell, Kai too was abandoned by his owner at a multi storey carpark. We have come full circle with Kai's story. It was also heartwarming to see otherwise reserved people break into genuine smiles when talking about their own pets, and when interacting with the two stars who graced the event: 14 year old Kai and 17 year old Ah Girl. It was a privilege to attend the SPCA gala dinner this year as a committee member to celebrate all that the SPCA does for the voiceless in our community. While there may not be time to properly grieve the little ones like Bell who leave too soon, my friends at the SPCA honour their memory by working hard to protect the hundreds who come through their doors each month. The SPCA also performs surgeries, offers free/subsidised veterinary treatment for low-income households, sterilises stray dogs, and more. In the past year alone, SPCA helped 4736 animals, and rescued 1892 distressed animals. Advocating for the voiceless can be heartbreaking work, but the good people at the SPCA fight on every single day, heroically taking on the devastating cases of abandonment and abuse, despite the emotional and physical toll. The SPCA holds a special place in my heart. Animal abandonment is a difficult topic, only because it is unimaginable how someone can bring themselves to give up on an animal that would have only offered unconditional love and companionship through its life. I was grateful that Bell did not pass on alone, and that he was surrounded by SPCA staff who opened their hearts to him, and cared for him to his last breath.īell is one of 266 abandoned animals the SPCA took in last year. Bell passed on quite suddenly on Christmas morning, right before he was able to experience the warmth of our home, and the embrace of someone who never would have given up on him. And so, logically, I decided that I must have him.įor weeks, the good people at the SPCA treated his tiny body, and I held out hope that he would come home to me soon so that I could shower him with all the love he deserved. He suffered from kidney failure, had cataracts in both eyes, lost most of his teeth, and his tongue stuck out of his mouth permanently, almost comically.īell was, quite possibly, the ugliest dog I had ever laid my eyes on. Bell was abandoned at SPCA by his owner, masquerading as a Good Samaritan who wanted to turn in a dog they had found.īell, a senior dog, needed blood transfusion.
